A grand wrestling spectacle unfolded at the iconic Panchanan Bayam Samity, Jorabagan Park, North Kolkata, as the ‘Wrestling Championship 2025’ was organized by the West Bengal Wrestling Association (WBWA) in association with Lions Club of Kolkata Magnates. The event, supported by Hello Kolkata (3D News Media) and Rotary Club of Kasba, was held in heartfelt memory of the eminent English litterateur Late Prof. Dr. Lina S. Chakraborthy.
The championship witnessed enthusiastic participation from approximately 70 young wrestlers aged between 5 and 18 years, representing a wide spectrum of talent and passion for the traditional sport. Sovan Chakraborty, Chief Organizer and Secretary of WBWA, emphasized that the event aimed to nurture young athletes while preserving the rich heritage of Indian wrestling.
The event was personally supported by Prof. Dr. Parthasarathi Chakraborthy, President of the Lions Magnates, who paid tribute to his late wife, Prof. Dr. Lina S. Chakraborthy, by championing the cause of youth development and sportsmanship.
The gathering was honored by the presence of celebrated personalities such as Ashit Saha, Vice-President of the Wrestling Federation of India, Retired Dy. Commissioner of Police Manoj Das, Arunangshu Saha (WBWA Vice-President), and technical consultant Sudip Chakraborty, alongside dedicated social workers including Manoj Thakur, Mousumi Basu, Sanchita Das, and others.
In addition to the organizational support from Dr. Nataraj Ray (Past President, ISTD), Soma Chakraborty (Goodace Hospital Founder), Saptarshi Biswas (Novacle Technologies), and Dr. Suresh Agarwal (Pragyan Foundation Chairman), the event also received backing from social initiatives like We Are The Common People and Swapnapuran Welfare Trust.
The championship was led by Nandan Debnath as Tournament Director, with Sweta Dubey officiating as Chief Referee, ensuring a smooth and fair competition.
Lion Asish Basak, the Chief Patron, remarked that this championship aligned perfectly with the Lions’ mission of selfless service and community welfare, giving young athletes a platform to display their skills.
Prof. Dr. Parthasarathi Chakraborthy delivered the vote of thanks, highlighting that wrestling is not merely a test of strength but also a harmonious blend of body, mind, and strategy. He encouraged continued support for sports that promote discipline and character building.
The event was a grand success, serving both as a competitive sports meet and a heartfelt tribute, strengthening the legacy of Late Prof. Dr. Lina S. Chakraborthy while inspiring future generations of wrestlers.
