In a unique blend of nostalgia and advocacy, former students of South Point High School, Batch of 1998, organised a unique Picnic on a heritage Tram to express support for the continuation of Kolkata’s iconic tram system as a sustainable mode of mass transport.
The four-hour journey covered the historic route from Gariahat to Shyambazar and back, transforming the tram into a moving celebration. The onboard picnic featured magic shows, a lively quiz contest, and a shared lunch, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie while drawing attention to the cultural and environmental value of trams.
Participants highlighted that trams, being eco-friendly, energy-efficient, and deeply embedded in Kolkata’s urban heritage, deserve renewed public and policy support. The initiative aimed to demonstrate how trams can remain relevant—not just as transport, but as a living symbol of the city’s commitment to sustainable mobility.
The event stood as a reminder that preserving Kolkata’s trams is as much about safeguarding the future as it is about honouring the past.
