In a heartwarming tribute to the unsung heroes of the city, Jharna Bhattacharjee, Cultural Advisor of the LIONS CLUB OF KOLKATA MAGNATES, celebrated Shashti by honouring veteran hand-pulled rickshaw pullers on the streets of Kolkata.
Known for her contributions as a poet, lyricist, and committed social welfare activist, Jharna took this opportunity to express gratitude to the rickshaw pullers, describing them as an integral part of the city’s heritage.
The event witnessed active participation from other members of the Lions Magnates team, including Lion Sangita Das, Dr. Shanoli Ray, and well-known social influencer Asish Basak. Together, they distributed gift items and essential supplies to the aging rickshaw pullers, many of whom continue to earn a living through sheer physical effort, often ignored by modern society.
Jharna Bhattacharjee voiced her concern about the neglect faced by this community, stating,
“Hand-pulled rickshaws are not just a mode of transport—they represent the cultural roots of Kolkata. These pullers deserve dignity, support, and encouragement. Citizens should choose to ride these rickshaws and help ensure they earn a fair livelihood.”
The event served not only as an act of kindness but also as a reminder to value the city’s living heritage and those who embody it every day.
